Sasquatch Sighting Report
Sudbury Area, Ontario — February 2002
Witness: Ken Dokis
Date: February 2002
Time: Approximately 7:00 a.m.
General Location: Between North Bay and Sudbury, Ontario, apparently within several miles of Sudbury
Observation Type: Visual sighting from aircraft
Ken Dokis, a member of Nipissing First Nation and the Ojibway Migizi, or Eagle Clan, was travelling by Bearskin Airlines from North Bay toward Sioux Lookout in February 2002. Sudbury was the first scheduled stop.
At the time, Dokis was serving as a Chief of Police. He had spent much of his life familiar with the forests and terrain of Northern Ontario.
The flight departed North Bay at approximately 7:00 a.m. It was still around daybreak, but the morning was clear and visibility was good. Snow covered the ground and the rising daylight reflected off the snow, making the surrounding terrain relatively easy to see.
As the aircraft approached Sudbury, Dokis was looking out the window at the landscape below. He recalled seeing a large hill or rocky ridge in the distance. The area had relatively sparse vegetation, including smaller white birch rather than large mature trees.
While looking toward the hillside, Dokis noticed a very large dark or black object.
His first impression was that he was looking at the exposed root system of a large tree that had been blown over. However, after continuing to watch it, he began to question that explanation because he did not believe there were trees large enough on that particular hillside to create something of that size.
He next considered whether it might be a bear.
That explanation also seemed questionable to him because it was February, there was snow on the ground and he expected bears in the region to still be hibernating.
As the aircraft continued toward the object, Dokis watched the figure carefully.
He then saw it stand upright.
Once upright, the figure appeared extremely large. Dokis compared its size to the largest refrigerator he had ever seen and believed it may have been even taller.
The figure then took several steps.
Dokis continued watching as the aircraft passed.
At some point during the observation, the figure stopped and turned toward the airplane.
Dokis had the impression that the figure was looking directly toward the aircraft. He could not determine whether it was specifically looking at him through the window or simply reacting to the passing plane.
He continued watching the figure as long as possible.
There were several other passengers aboard the aircraft, but they appeared to be resting or sleeping. Dokis considered waking one of them so they could see what he was observing. He also thought about calling the pilots' attention to it.
He decided against doing so.
At the time, he was serving as a Chief of Police and was concerned about how the situation might appear if the other passengers or pilots were unable to see what he was seeing.
As the aircraft continued past the hillside, Dokis began analyzing the situation from the perspective of his policing background.
His mind initially tried to determine whether the figure could somehow have been a person.
He began looking for evidence that might explain how someone could have reached the hillside so early in the morning during winter.
He searched the surrounding terrain for roads, snowmobiles, vehicles, trails or other obvious means of access.
He also looked for nearby lakes or other features that could potentially explain how someone had reached the location.
Dokis reported that he could see no obvious road, snowmobile, vehicle or other indication of human access.
He also questioned why anyone would be standing high on the side of the hill shortly after 7:00 a.m. during February.
Eventually the figure passed out of view.
Dokis then moved from his seat to another seat in the aircraft in an attempt to continue watching the area through another window.
He was unable to locate the figure again.
The aircraft continued toward Sudbury and eventually landed.
Dokis did not make an immediate public report of the sighting.
Within approximately a day or two of the incident, he told an Indigenous woman who worked as an administrator at the police office where he was stationed in Sioux Lookout.
For many years afterward, Dokis discussed the encounter only with close family members and Indigenous friends. He said he was reluctant to speak publicly about what he had seen because he believed Indigenous people would be more likely to understand and accept the experience.
More than twenty years after the encounter, Dokis began speaking publicly about it.
One of the first significant occasions occurred during a summer solstice gathering at Nipissing First Nation, where he shared the experience with elders and other members of the community.
Dokis has continued to maintain that the object he observed was not simply a stationary feature on the landscape.
According to his account, he watched a very large, dark figure stand upright, take several steps and turn toward the passing aircraft.
He could not identify any nearby vehicle, snowmobile, road or other obvious explanation for how a person would have reached the location.
Dokis associates the experience with Sabe, a forest being in Ojibway tradition that he connects with the Grandfather Teaching of honesty.
He has stated that he does not view the encounter as frightening. Instead, he considers it a significant and positive experience and has said that he would like to encounter the being again.

Witness Conclusion
Ken Dokis believes he witnessed a Sasquatch or Sabe on the hillside outside Sudbury in February 2002.
The encounter remains unexplained based on his observations at the time.
